March 11, 1995:
Music sensation Prince plays to a packed house at Manchester’s G-Mex centre as part of his Ultimate Live Experience tour.
At the time, Prince had officially adopted a symbol – known as the ‘Love Symbol’ – as his stage name. He took the step as he was in dispute with his record company.
He was therefore billed as ‘The Artist Formerly Known as Prince’ or ‘The Artist’.
Prince had played twice at Maine Road before his G-Mex concert – on the Diamonds and Pearls tour in March 1992 and on the Nude tour in August 1990.
March 10, 1984:
Manchester United goalkeeper Gary Bailey beats Leicester City striker Gary Lineker to the ball as the two clubs meet at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils won the First Division match 2-0 thanks to goals from striker Mark Hughes, in his breakthrough season for United, and midfielder Remi Moses.
Bailey made 294 senior appearances for United from 1978 to 1987 and won two England caps.
Fellow England international Lineker won 80 caps for his country, scoring 48 goals.
March 12, 1991:
Princess Diana delights the crowds during a walkabout after visiting the Manchester Art Gallery in Mosley Street.
Accompanying her was bodyguard Ken Wharfe, dressed in a dark jacket with a green handkerchief in the pocket.
Just out of shot was Prince Charles. The couple were taking part in a royal visit to the North West.
Princess Diana returned to Manchester in November the same year to open the Francis House Children’s Hospice in Didsbury.
