July 31 2002:

Sprinter Darren Campbell brings the baton home as England take gold in the 4 x 100m relay at the Manchester Commonwealth Games.
Campbell, born in Moss Side, ran the anchor leg for the home team just beating Asafa Powell of Jamaica in a photo finish.
His fellow runners in the quartet were Jason Gardener, Marlon Devonish and Allyn Condon.
Two years earlier, Campbell had won silver in the 200 metres at the Sydney Olympics.
The Commonwealth Games were a huge success for Manchester, showing the world how much the city had changed since the 1996 bombing.


August 1 1970:

Manchester United striker Denis Law gives a big smile to photographers and fans before the Red Devils’ Watney Cup match against Reading at Elm Park.
United won 3-2, then beat Hull in England’s first penalty shoot-out after drawing 1-1 after extra time.
They lost the final 1-4 to Derby County at the Baseball Ground.
The Watney Cup, contested by the eight top-scoring teams in Divisions One to Four (two from each league), lasted from 1970 to 1973.

July 31 1956:

England spin-bowler Jim Laker signs autographs after ripping Australia apart in the Fourth Test of the Ashes series at Old Trafford.
Laker took a record 19 wickets, helping England win the match by an innings and 170 runs.
He returned the extraordinary figures of nine wickets for 37 runs in the first innings and ten wickets for 53 in the second.
England won the five-match Ashes series by two Tests to one.
