August 21, 1990:
Singer-songwriter Prince performs at Maine Road during one of the four visits he made to Manchester from 1900 to 2002.
He was in the city on his Nude tour, returning to Maine Road two years later on the Diamonds and Pearls tour which took in Asia, Australia and Europe.
In 1995, Prince played the G-Mex on his Ultimate Live Experience European tour to promote his new album The Gold Experience. He was back in the city in 2002 at the Manchester Apollo.
August 15, 1992:
Manchester United striker Mark Hughes, left, taunts the Sheffield United defence in the first match of the new season at Bramall Lane.
The Red Devils lost 2-1 with Hughes scoring United’s solitary goal, but went on to win the inaugural Premier League to end their 26-year wait for a top flight title.
Hughes was United’s top scorer for the season with 16 goals in all competitions.
August 20, 1994:
Manchester City goalkeeper Tony Coton is pictured in Premier League action for the Blues at the start of the new season.
After losing 3-0 away to Arsenal, the Blues beat West Ham 3-0 and then Everton 4-0, both at Maine Road. Then came a crushing 3-0 defeat away at Chelsea. City eventually finished the league in 17th place on 49 points.
Coton made 164 league appearances for the Blues after transferring from Watford in 1990. He joined Manchester United in 1996 as understudy to Peter Schmeichel, but left after one season.
