November 15, 1969:
Manchester boutique owner Joan Christmas (23) models the must-have fashion accessory of the late 1960s – the maxi skirt.
The maxi, along with the ankle-length maxi coat, started to outsell its predecessor the mini skirt in 1967, particularly in fashion centres like Manchester and London.
The popular 1965 film Doctor Zhivago, set in Russia and starring Omar Sharif and Julie Christie, helped encourage the maxi craze.
November 19, 1969:
Ted Wood invites some unusual guests into his Birch home for a Bible reading – a group of Hell’s Angels no less!
The motorcyclists listened intently at the community meeting as our image clearly shows.
The first European chapter of the Hell’s Angels Motorcycle Club was formed in London in May 1969. Manchester was quick to follow suit a few months later.
The original Hell’s Angels club was founded in the Fontana/San Bernardino area of the USA in March 1948.
November 18, 1975:
George Best lines up for an All Stars XI at the Paul Aimson testimonial match at Bury’s home ground Gigg Lane.
Alongside him are fellow football legends Derek Dougan, left, and goalkeeper Alex Stepney.
Best, the former Manchester United and Northern Ireland winger, was making a comeback with new club Stockport County – and desperately needed match practice.
Aimson, a forward, scored 11 goals in 31 appearances for Bury during the 1966-7 season. But a serious knee injury forced him into early retirement in 1974.
