October 31, 1990:

Manchester’s new Santa, reputed to be the biggest in the world, ran into a spot of bother before being positioned at the top of the Town Hall.

For two days running it was just too windy to hoist the one-ton inflatable on to his lofty perch! Steeplejacks had to bide their time until the skies had calmed.

The new inflatable replaced the previous smaller Santa who had been retired after six years at the top.

October 23, 1990:

Manchester United central defender Steve Bruce tussles for the ball with Liverpool striker Ian Rush during a Rumbelows League Cup tie at Old Trafford.

United won the encounter 3-1 with goals from Mark Hughes, Lee Sharpe and a penalty from Bruce himself. The Red Devils went on to reach the final of the competition at Wembley where they lost 1-0 to Sheffield Wednesday.

Bruce, until recently the manager of Newcastle United, made 309 league appearances for United from 1987 to 1996, scoring 36 goals.

October 4, 2001:

Midfielder Steven Gerrard takes a breather after a practice session with the England team at Manchester United’s Carrington training ground.

England were in Manchester to play Greece at Old Trafford in a World Cup qualifier. The result was a 2-2 draw with United’s David Beckham scoring a dramatic free kick deep into injury time.

Liverpool stalwart Gerrard, currently the manager of Glasgow Rangers, won 114 caps for England from 2000 to 2014, scoring 21 goals.
