May 22, 1971:

Coronation Street star Anne Reid takes the front seat after marrying TV producer Peter Eckersley at the Jackson’s Row Register Office in Manchester.

Reid played Valerie Tatlock, later Barlow, on the Granada soap from 1961 to 1971. She also portrayed Jean in the sitcom Dinnerladies and was BAFTA nominated for her role as Celia Dawson in Last Tango in Halifax.

Prior to Coronation Street, Reid appeared on The Benny Hill Show, Hancock’s Half Hour and The Adventures of Robin Hood.

May 26, 1983:

Former Manchester United manager Sir Matt Busby makes the return journey from London’s Euston Station after seeing the Reds thrash Brighton 4-0 in the FA Cup final replay at Wembley.

Bryan Robson netted twice with the other goals coming from Norman Whiteside and Arnold Muhren. The teams were originally locked at 2-2 after extra time.

At the age of 18, Whiteside became the youngest player to score in an FA Cup final. He also scored in the League Cup final defeat to Liverpool and played for Northern Ireland in the 1982 FIFA World Cup.

May 6, 1964:

Checking their currency at Ringway Airport before flying out to North America are Liverpool footballers Ron Yeats, right, with rookies Trevor Roberts and Fred Molyneux.

Reds’ skipper Yeats was trying to explain how much a dollar was worth before boarding the plane for the five-week tour.

Liverpool came home to win their first ever FA Cup in the 1964-5 season, beating Leeds United 2-1 at Wembley.
