Manchester United half-back Frank Barson takes a break from training in his sweater – the preferred work-out attire for the 1920s.

Tough-tackling Barson made 140 league appearances for the Red Devils from 1922 to 1928, scoring four goals. He also played for Wigan Borough, Aston Villa and Watford.

Barson helped United win promotion in 1925 and was given a public house in Manchester as a result. But he hated attention so much that he gave the pub to its head waiter on the opening night!
