August 1 1970:

The August heat is a bit too much for Manchester United striker Denis Law who’s rolled his shirt up during the Watney Cup match against Reading at Elm Park.

United won the pre-season match 3-2 with two goals from Bobby Charlton and one from Paul Edwards. They then defeated Hull City on penalties before playing the final against Derby County at the Baseball Ground.

George Best scored the only goal for the Red Devils who were beaten 4-1 by Brian Clough’s spirited Derby side.

July 27 1926:

England batsman Pat Hendren adjusts his cap before going out to face the Australian attack in the Fourth Test of 1926 Ashes series at Old Trafford.

The match ended in a draw, the fourth in a row in the series, but England won the final Test at the Oval by 289 runs to take the Ashes 1-0.

As well as playing cricket for Middlesex and England, Hedren was a talented footballer. He started his career with Brentford but played twice for Manchester City in 1908 before signing for Coventry.
