It was a return trip to Manchester for the Duchess. A year earlier she took part in a tree-planting ceremony and toured local shops and schools in Altrincham.
April 13, 1966
Manchester United striker Denis Law closes down Partizan Belgrade defender Fahrudin Vasovic during the European Cup semi-final between the two teams.
The away leg ended in a 2-0 defeat for the Red Devils, so it was all to play for at Old Trafford a week later. United won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Nobby Stiles, but went out of the competition 2-1 on aggregate.
Partizan lost the final 2-1 to Real Madrid at the Heysel Stadium, Brussels.
The Red Devils also reached the semi-final of the FA Cup, but were beaten 1-0 by Everton.
April 4, 1983:
Manchester City defender Nicky Reid evades Liverpool’s David Fairclough in the First Division encounter between the two clubs at Maine Road.
The match finished badly for the Blues as Liverpool won 4-0. The whole league campaign ended badly too – City were relegated on the last day of the season after losing 1-0 at home to Luton Town.
The Blues weren’t even in the relegation zone until the final day, but had suffered a slump in form after the sacking of manager John Bond in February.
Reid made 216 league appearances for City from 1977 to 1987, scoring two goals.
