Coronation Street veteran William Roache, who has played Ken Barlow from the first episode in December 1960, rehearses a scene with Jack Howarth as Albert Tatlock.
Howarth was in the series from 1960 to 1984. Born in Rochdale, he was the son of comedian Bert Howarth and went to school with singer and entertainer Gracie Fields.
April 22, 1973:
Alex ‘Hurricane’ Higgins sizes up a shot in the World Snooker Championships at the City Exhibition Hall in Manchester.
Higgins defeated Fred Davis by 16 frames to 14 in the quarter finals, but lost to Australian Eddie Charlton 23-9 in the semis. Ray Reardon beat Charlton in the final by 38 frames to 32.
In a tempestuous career, Higgins was world champion in 1972 and 1986 and UK Champion in 1983. He won the Masters title in 1978 and 1981.
April 22, 1999:
Footballer Dwight Yorke returns from Turin after scoring in Manchester United’s 3-2 victory over Juventus in the Champions League semi-final second leg.
The other goals came from Roy Keane and Andrew Cole. United drew the first leg at Old Trafford 1-1 after Ryan Giggs scored in the 92nd minute.
United went on to become European champions by defeating Bayern Munich 2-1 in Barcelona with late goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the 91st and 93rd minute.
The victory crowned a remarkable treble for United. They finished the season as league champions and won the FA Cup beating Newcastle 2-0 at Wembley.
