Welcome to Then and Now, where each week we compare images of Manchester streets, landmarks, buildings and events from bygone days with today.

Our main image this week shows Manchester United players celebrating a 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford in November 1963.

Especially happy is striker Denis Law, far right, who scored a hat-trick in the First Division clash. The other goal came from fellow forward David Herd, second left.

Completing the line-up are midfielders Bobby Charlton, left, and Graham Moore. The teams were close to each other in the table at the time with United third on 31 points and Spurs fifth on 30.

The Red Devils went on to finish second in the league with 53 points – four behind champions Liverpool – while Tottenham were fourth on 51 points.

It proved to be an outstanding season for Scottish international Law who was United’s top scorer with 46 goals in all competitions.

The Red Devils, under manager Matt Busby, reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup and the quarter finals of the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

The season was also memorable for the debut of 17-year-old Northern Irish forward George Best, who played 17 times for United.

In total, Law made 309 league appearances for the Red Devils from 1962 to 1973, scoring no less than 171 goals.

Our modern image shows another goal-scoring phenomenon back at United after playing for Real Madrid and Juventus – Cristiano Ronaldo. He’s arriving at the Carrington training ground at the wheel of a £170,000 Lamborghini Urus.

Ronaldo scored 84 goals in 196 league appearances during his first spell at United from 2003 to 2009.
